Eggs with the ‘wow’ factor!

Spoil your family and friends this Easter with eye-catching, handcrafted chocolate eggs, Geraldo’s bespoke Easter eggs or some novelty treats for the kids.  There is no doubt that our artisan chocolatiers have gone to town this year with their unusual designs and flavours. Perfect Easter gifts for all the good eggs in your life!

Earlier this year we visited one of our main chocolate suppliers, The Arran Chocolate Factory and got a sneak preview of Jan’s wonderful Easter creations.  These beauties have hopped over the water to Geraldo’s of Largs.  Adults and children alike will love their handcrafted eggs, novelty bunnies and chocolate ducks.  And have you seen James of Arran’s chocolate ‘twins’ on our Facebook page?  Enter our competition for your chance to take them home for Easter.

We also have really unique Easter egg creations from Stas Chocolatier and the ever-popular Chocolate Alchemist with unusual toppings such as nuts, dried fruit pieces, caramel, popcorn and chilli to add texture and a new flavour dimension to the chocolate. For those of you with food allergies or intolerances, we even have the great tasting Moo Free range of eggs.  You won’t find these in your local supermarket!

With our longer opening hours over Easter, there’s plenty of opportunity to pop in and see our full range of egg-ceptional Easter treats.

Happy Easter everyone!

Arran magic

Where can you find the perfect malt whisky, mouthwatering handmade chocolates and stunning scenery?  The Isle of Arran of course!  The Geraldo’s team had a fabulous and truly informative day out this week to one of Scotland’s most magical islands and what a day it was!

The Isle of Arran Distillery

After a breezy trip on the ferry, Senior Brand Manager, Louisa Young, accompanied the team to the newly refurbished distillery in Lochranza.  Nestled below the mountains, the distillery is in the ideal location to produce the perfect malt; where the pure water flows into nearby Loch na Davie.  Combine this with Arran’s warm micro-climate, high quality barley and yeast, expertly picked oak casks and patience – up to 18 years of patience – while the wondrous character of the whisky matures.  But as Master Craftsman, James MacTaggart says, “There is no point having good ingredients if you don’t have good people to make it.”  The passion and knowledge that James, Louisa and all of the staff at the distillery have about their whisky is inspiring and it tastes fabulous too. Tours are starting again on Monday, 27th Feb 2017 and definitely worth taking the trip over there to see it.

The Arran Chocolate Factory

We all had a warm glow (could’ve been the whisky) as we travelled back to Brodick; spotting golden eagles, deer and seals en route.  The magic continued as we were welcomed by owner James McLehry, and his senior chocolatier Jan, at The Arran Chocolate Factory.  The sweet aroma hits you as soon as you enter the shop.  Jan, who has been making chocolate there for 15 years, gave us a fabulous demonstration on making Easter eggs and some of their delicious hand-crafted treats.  We also got a sneaky peek at some of her wonderful Easter creations.  Watch this space as these little ducklings are sure to nip over the water to Geraldo’s of Largs soon!

A huge thank you to The Arran Distillery and The Arran Chocolate Factory for hosting our visit.  We all came home much more knowledgeable and enthused about Arran’s warming malts, delicious chocolates and wonderful people.

The Arran Whisky range and James of Arran Chocolates are stocked in Geraldo’s of Largs.  Pop in to find out more from one of our team members.  They’ll have lots to tell you!

From ice cream to chocolate!

As we near the end of our ice cream season, it can only mean one thing…

CHOCOLATE SEASON!

Celebrate Chocolate Week with us!

Celebrate Chocolate Week with us!

And with the start of chocolate season comes Chocolate Week.

Now in its 12th year, this is the UK’s biggest celebration of all things chocolate.  It’s when the best of the best as well as the nation are brought together to celebrate one of our favourite things – chocolate!

After a trip to Belgium last month I spent 4 days visiting good, better and the best chocolatiers in the business.  With a minimum wage of around £25 per hour (yes, you read that correctly), it’s no wonder machines are used to produce so much of the chocolate that comes out of Belgium.  However, there was one exception and not just the last place on our itinerary or the biggest, but most definitely the best.

Pralineur Van Coillie started his business in 1976 when he was 40 years old after perfecting his skills in France and Switzerland and has dedicated his life to being the best in the business.  His skills are renowned throughout the industry in Belgium and he’s gaining popularity in the UK too.  He has already won the the Tasting Club of Great Britain 3 times and has a worldwide fan base of elite corporate customers.

The factory still produces most of their chocolates by hand under the leadership of his lovely grandson Alexandre, with Mr Van Coillie keeping a watchful eye over production and their team of over 20 highly skilled staff.  Alexandre told us all about their partnership programme with cocoa farmers in West Africa along with Barry Callebaut to ensure the chocolate and cocoa supply chain is sustainable and everyone in these communities are taught how best to manage their farms in order to improve conditions for their families.

He then gave us an extensive tour of his wonderful showroom and factory where we watched his amazing chocolate shoes being created, dipped and filled with his exquisite chocolates.

Every style you can imagine, filled with exquisite Van Coillie chocolates.

After 4 days of tasting a LOT of chocolate, this visit with Alexandre and his mother did NOT disappoint. I’ve always said there is nothing like fresh ice cream just coming out of our machine and it’s the same with chocolate. When it’s just been enrobed in quality chocolate, then decorated by hand and sprinkled with the finest Piedmont roasted hazelnuts there’s nothing quite like it.

In case you didn’t know, we’ve been stocking Van Coillie chocolates in our cabinet for over 10 years but it’s not until now did WE really value their quality.  We’re expanding on the range for this season and you’ll start to see a lot more Van Coillie chocolates in our cabinet over the coming weeks.

Of course, there’s also the shoes which are already in stock and do we ladies need an excuse to buy shoes?

Happy Chocolate Week!

URGENT – PRODUCT RECALL!!!

Packed by hand with love.

Boxed chocolates from Sugar & Spice, Largs

It has come to our attention that ALL of our boxed chocolates have been sold WITHOUT ingredients labels. Disaster!!! Santa is most upset with us and has sent a message from Lapland instructing us to rectify this immediately. If you’ve eaten yours already (naughty you!) then you do not need to read any further as you already know what’s in them and maybe, just maybe, if you’ve been a good little boy or girl this year there’s a possibility someone may have bought you another box for Christmas. Think yourself lucky, especially if you have eaten chocolates that were supposed to be a gift for someone else!!!  If you have been very good and have safely stored them away for Christmas Day then the following information is for you:-

INGREDIENTS:-

Chocolates, of course, but not just your bog-standard, off-the-shelf type of chocolates that were probably manufactured by mass machinery and produced months ago.  No, we’re talking about the kind of chocolates that have been lovingly created by someone who spends all day imagining how to sum up Christmas in approximately 20g a bite.  The kind of chocolate that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside when you bite into it and it instantly reminds you of your favourite Christmas of all time.

You’ll also find some thought and consideration in the box. We like to make sure you get a selection from our cabinet, however small the box, so you may find some or all of the following:

PRALINES – Sorry, but yes pralines DO contain nuts ground down very finely so that the chocolate is nice and smooth.  You simply HAVE to taste the festive selection so make sure you get there first.

PARISIAN CREAMS – be considerate and save these for your grandparents, this will ensure they leave you something in their will – maybe more chocolates!

MARZIPAN – love it or loathe it, you’ll just have to chance it…ours may actually convert you.

TRUFFLES – wait till you taste the amaretto truffle but you’ll have to guess which one it is…you never know, if you close your eyes, make a wish and believe in Santa then this may be your lucky day.

CHERRY LIQUEURS – these are quite easy to identify as there’s a stalk coming out of them.  That’s because it really is a REAL cherry inside and you have to put the WHOLE thing in your mouth at once otherwise you’ll dribble Kirsch all down your new Christmas outfit.

CHOCOLATE GINGERS – ginger is very good for your digestive system but if you’ve absolutely stuffed yourself then it’s unlikely these will help on this occasion – maybe just have one okay?

LIQUEURS – these tend to be foil-wrapped and similar to the cherry liqueurs so they make a mess if you don’t put the whole thing in your mouth at once.  If you have a full box of these make sure you don’t drink and drive afterwards.

We’ve done our best to think of everything this year but there is one final ingredient we think you should ALL know about:

It’s called LOVE and you can never over indulge on it?  LOVE for what we do and LOVE for YOU, our customers, who keep coming back to us year after year to buy our chocolates no matter what. Thank you ALL very much!

Merry Christmas!

Much LOVE and best wishes for a very happy Christmas from all of us at Sugar & Spice, Largs. xxx

P.S. If by any remotely impossible chance you are NOT happy with your chocolates this year then please email Santa and let him know.  Alternatively, email his little elves with your dietary requirements or personal recommendations with the title “Chocolate Elf & Safety Dept” as the subject heading to info@sugar-and-spice.co.uk and we’ll see what we can do about it for Christmas next year.

PPS Sweet Caroline would like to wish you all the very best of health and wealth in 2015. 😘
